In recent years, Vietnam has become an attractive destination, attracting investors worldwide. With the advantages of stable political security, favorable geography, developed infrastructure, and abundant labor force, Vietnam has achieved the fastest economic growth in the Southeast Asia region. This opens up opportunities for development and increases the demand for conference interpreting at events
Since international integration has brought many positive benefits to Vietnamese businesses and foreign investors when expanding into new markets. Therefore, every step is thoroughly researched, with careful examination of culture, laws, politics, and even the habits and psychology of the local people before officially commencing operations. Large corporations often hold press conferences or organize seminars with a capacity of hundreds or thousands of attendees for the purpose of outreach, networking, and exploring opinions.
All of these activities are aimed at the goal of sharing knowledge and information, fostering trade connections, introducing products and services, providing personal development training, as well as building bilateral relationships between the two countries. The participants are mostly individuals with high social status and intellectual background, including leaders, business people, and government officials. Therefore, each launch event has a clear strategy and plan, with caution taken at every step of implementation. As a result, investors and businesses highly value the quality of interpretation, as it can determine the success or failure of the event, impacting business planning and overall benefits.
Understanding the importance and wanting to assist businesses in achieving high efficiency, PLG Translation continually sets criteria and demands that interpreters for conferences must meet specific conditions. These include professional qualifications, years of experience in conference interpretation, understanding of various industries, cross-cultural knowledge, public speaking skills, and emotional management. Especially, they must handle high-pressure situations since each conference session can last for several consecutive hours. Interpreters are not allowed to leave their designated positions for any reason. Furthermore, they must have quick reflexes as each translation is expected within 3 seconds of the speaker’s statement. Therefore, conference interpretation, also known as simultaneous interpretation, is considered an elite service reserved for important events. Consequently, the budget to hire conference interpreters is not cheap. However, considering the effectiveness that interpretation brings, the benefits are immeasurable. This includes successfully connecting business deals, expanding partner relationships, and building a reputation for businesses when venturing into the global market.
Recognizing the importance of this, PLG has spent many years developing expertise in handling 150 languages and has carefully selected 8,550 professional collaborators worldwide, covering 500 specialized fields at various proficiency levels. Specifically, there is a maximum of approximately 875 high-level conference interpreters living in various countries who receive praise for their roles in handling complex tasks. At PLG, we are capable of providing a wide range of conference interpretation services, including:
1. Training and education conference interpreting
According to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) statistics, in 2023, the world organized more than 320,000 training and education conferences, with over 110 million attendees. In Vietnam alone, at least 1,000 conferences took place with a total of 100,000 foreign participants. The estimated annual growth rate of the number of conferences fluctuates between 5-10%. This indicates a growing trend of training and education conferences in developing countries and their increasing popularity in Vietnam. Moreover, there is a clear rising demand for language interpretation services for these purposes, drawing attention from organizing entities.
Beyond serving the goal of providing knowledge, skills, and opportunities for exchange and networking with experts, building connections for partners, and learners, organizing entities can generate additional revenue through participant fees, selling courses, or receiving advertising sponsorship from brands. Therefore, the content program must be genuinely appealing, with a clear plan to attract a large number of participants. Once everything is well-prepared and professional, coupled with excellent interpretation services with specialized investment, it contributes significantly to enhancing the brand value as well as business benefits.
2. Bilingual MC
Typically, at conference events, the roles of Bilingual MC are separate tasks. However, in some cases, they may be combined to enhance professionalism, creating a sense of closeness for the audience, increasing interaction, and attracting attention with a friendly and charming atmosphere. On the other hand, it can also save costs for the program. However, conversely, if the right person is not chosen, it can lead to risks and have a significant impact on the organizers. An MC who fails to convey the full meaning of the content or makes interpretation mistakes can pose challenges. Sometimes, they may feel stressed, losing focus and not performing both tasks well.
Therefore, to embody the role of a Bilingual MC, PLG often sets high requirements for each premium interpretation. In addition to professional qualifications, experience, fluent speech, speed, appearance, and attire standards, interpreters must work with organization, meticulous psychological preparation, keen observation, emotional management, and adept behavior in various situations to be recognized as professional MC interpreters. Thanks to a rigorous selection process, PLG attracts many renowned MCs proficient in foreign languages to contribute their skills in the dual role of interpretation and MC at PLG.
3. Simultaneous interpreting
Simultaneous interpreting can be said to be the most difficult activity in the translation profession in general and in conferences in particular. To take on this job, the interpreter must have a high level of education and experience because the difficulty is many times higher than other forms. In part, the interpreter does not appear in front of the crowd, so they cannot see the attitude or guess the expressive actions of the speaker, but only rely on the sound through headphones in the cabin, usually located at the end of the conference hall. Meanwhile, there are times when there is pressure from technical problems, such as low volume due to external connection errors. However, cabin interpreters still have to maintain professionalism when translating both ways simultaneously at the same time as the speaker or presenter on stage. This takes place continuously for several hours at a time with the requirements of accuracy, smooth sentences, and easy to understand. Therefore, the number of interpreters who have reached the level of skilled cabin interpreters is relatively small. The remuneration for cabin interpreters for conference sessions is very high because the event is usually considered important and also takes many days of work before that. Normally, a cabin has 2 interpreters to support each other, so there are some languages that can cost several thousand USD per session.
On the other hand, many organizations, due to budget constraints, have to reduce the number of translators while still ensuring quality. Understanding this reason, PLG also allocates multiple levels that are suitable for the needs and financial capabilities of each event to protect the reputation of customers, helping conferences achieve corresponding results. As a result, PLG has received mostly positive feedback about its cabin interpretation services.
